While this error can be easily solved by reviewing the events in VI Client, I figure I should blog it anyways in case anyone was searching for this string and had ran out of ideas.
I was doing some maintenance on a hosted environment a few days ago where we had to add new NetApp shelf to the existing FAS that hosted storage for a 3 node ESX cluster with 20 virtual machines currently used to host a medical tracking application. The setup was nothing fancy and small enough to be easily built with the NetApp providing SAN storage with SAS drives and an iSCSI SAN with SATA drives for backups.
The work done in the maintenance window was mainly ESX and storage so we only had my storage colleague and myself. The problem I ran into early was that since the environment was so locked down, I was unable to get to the ESX hosts directly with VI Client when I shutdown Virtual Center (It’s VI3). I ended up hooking my laptop to the iSCSI storage’s port to get to the hosts directly.
Once we finished provisioning the new storage and started booting back up the VMs, I received an error on the 2 virtual machines configured with MSCS and SQL clustering. The VMs had RDMs and disks located on the iSCSI vmfs store for backups. The first error I saw was:
Failed to power on virtualMachine: A general system error occurred:
Definitely not helpful at all. The next message was much better:
Message on virtualMachine: Cannot open the disk ‘/vmfs/volumes/unique identifier/virtualmachine/file.vmdk
At the bottom of the Events entries in the Events Details window, we can see the following message:
Message on virtualMachine on esxHost in datacenterName: Cannot open the disk ‘/vmfs/volumes/unique identifier/virtualmachine/file.vmdk or one of….
Reason: Device or resource busy.
Once I saw the 2nd error I knew immediately why the VM wasn’t powering on (it has lost access to some of the disks) so I replaced the network cable from the iSCSI storage controller back to the port that it was on. From there on, the server booted back up.
Installing or following the steps to install is easy and everybody can do it but it won’t boot means you’re getting the error(unrecoverable error) and can’t go ahead, so if you’ve are suffering from this error then it’s time to solve it by the following steps. As a developer, I tend to use VMs extensively to test new features and deploy software that I wouldn’t like running on my main machine. VMware is brilliant in that it offers a free tool to create and run VMs - VMware Player.
As handy and great VMs are, they are also quite volatile and tend to break or get corrupt easily. If your host machine restarts unexpectedly or if the VM is not shut down properly etc. you may then experience issues the next time you try to restart. Below I have described how to resolve 3 of the most common corruption errors. The best place to look for issues, if not otherwise advised by the actual player is in the VMware log file which can be found at the directory where your VM is running from. I have a c:Virtual Machines directory for all my VMs.
1. The VM takes for ever to load/startup or presents you with a black screen and no progress
Close down VMware Player. Go to the directory where your VM files reside, search for and delete all directories and files ending in .lck
2. Warning: the system was unable to load a page of memory; this can be caused by network problems or a failing hard disk drive.
Go to the directory that your VM files reside, search for and delete all .vmem and .vmss files. These files hold the state of you VM before it was last shut down and are used to restore it to this state during start-up. If these files are corrupt for some reason, the VM startup will show the error above. Deleting these files allows you to reboot your VM OS with a clean slate.
3. Cannot open the disk ‘path of vmdk’ or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. Reason: the specific virtual disk needs repair
In this case, one of the vmdk files I corrupt and needs repairing. To fix this error, download and install the Virtual Disk Development Kit here (registration is required i'm afraid!)
Follow the steps below:
Unable To Find The Vmx Binary
You should see the following message:
“The virtual disk “path of your corrupt vmdk file” was corrupted and has been successfully repaired.
Happy Coding..
